Almeirim, Portugal

As a tribute to my hometown, here is a bit of its history!

Public library and surrounding gardens

Crossing the river Tagus (Tejo) from Santarém, and there before you are the fertile plains of the Ribatejo that produce an abundance of melons, tomatoes and wine. It has also produced a few legends but one that can be investigated and enjoyed even today is that of  "Sopa da Pedra" or stone soup. It was "invented" by the wandering friar seen boiling a stone in water for his soup, by gradually adding a little of this and a little of that good-hearted locals made it into an excellent hearty soup still served in local restaurants _ and very good it is too!

Where is Almeirim?
